Coaches' Kit Bag

When we think about a coach's kit bag, the first things that come to mind are usually the essentials: balls, bibs, cones and a whistle. These are important tools, but they are only part of what makes a successful coach.

The most valuable items in any coach's kit bag can't be packed into a holdall. They are the personal qualities, behaviours and mindset that help create a positive learning environment where players can develop, enjoy the game and reach their potential.

The Skills Beyond the Equipment

Great coaching starts with respect. Respect for players, fellow coaches, officials, parents and the game itself creates a culture where everyone feels valued and supported.

Empathy allows us to understand that every player arrives at training with different experiences, confidence levels, motivations and challenges. What works for one player may not work for another. Effective coaches take time to understand the individuals in front of them rather than applying the same approach to everyone.

Listening is one of the most underrated coaching skills. Players often tell us what they need through their questions, behaviours and feedback. By listening carefully, we gain valuable insight into how our sessions are landing and where development opportunities exist.

Positivity helps create an environment where players are willing to try, make mistakes and learn. Positive coaching does not mean ignoring areas for improvement—it means creating the confidence and psychological safety needed for growth.

Be Willing to Learn

Every coach has sessions that work brilliantly and sessions that do not go exactly as planned.

The best coaches are not those who never make mistakes; they are those who reflect, adapt and continually improve. A drill that looked perfect on paper may not achieve the intended outcome on the field. A session plan may need adjusted when players arrive tired, distracted or needing something different.

Feedback should be welcomed from players, fellow coaches and even parents where appropriate. Coaching is a journey of continuous learning, and every session provides an opportunity to develop both the players and ourselves.

Make Every Minute Count

Time with players is limited and valuable.

Arriving prepared, being punctual and having a clear plan allows coaches to maximise learning opportunities and reduce unnecessary downtime. Good preparation gives coaches the flexibility to adapt when circumstances change while still maintaining focus on the session's objectives.

Effective coaches constantly observe. They spot development opportunities, identify learning gaps and adjust activities to meet the needs of the group. They understand that not every player develops at the same pace and that individual support is often just as important as team development.

Create Experiences, Not Just Sessions

Players are far more likely to learn when they are engaged, challenged and enjoying themselves.

The most memorable sessions are often those where players leave smiling, feeling successful and looking forward to coming back next week. Fun and enjoyment are not distractions from learning—they are powerful tools that help drive it.

Challenge players appropriately. Celebrate effort as well as achievement. Encourage curiosity, creativity and problem-solving. Create an environment where players feel comfortable asking questions, making decisions and learning from mistakes.

What's in Your Kit Bag?

Before every session, ask yourself:

  • Am I prepared?
  • Am I ready to listen?
  • Am I open to learning?
  • Am I creating opportunities for every player to succeed?
  • Am I making this session enjoyable and engaging?

Balls, bibs, cones and a whistle will help run a session.

Respect, empathy, positivity, adaptability and a commitment to continuous learning will help shape players, teams and lifelong memories.

Those are the items that belong in every coach's kit bag.
